Why Am I Always Tired? Root Causes of Fatigue Nobody Talks About

Updated: Sep 30

Fatigue is one of the most common complaints I hear from clients. It’s not just about not getting enough sleep! Although sleep is one of the main foundations I work with people on. It’s the kind of exhaustion that doesn’t go away with a good night’s sleep, the kind that steals your joy, creativity, and resilience.

Fatigue is becoming alarmingly common in younger professionals. Burnout is showing up earlier and earlier, driven by relentless work demands, digital overload, and the pressure to always be “on.”

The Burnout Epidemic No One Talks About

We live in a world that rewards productivity but rarely honours rest. Many high-achievers push themselves through long hours, caffeine fixes, and “hustle culture” — until the body can’t keep up anymore.

This chronic stress takes its toll on the adrenal glands, the small but mighty organs that regulate cortisol, our stress hormone. Over time, the constant flood of stress signals leads to:

  • Energy crashes in the afternoon

  • Brain fog and poor memory

  • Anxiety or irritability

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep

  • Reliance on sugar, caffeine, or alcohol to cope

Sound familiar?

How Chronic Stress Impacts the Whole Body

Stress isn’t “just in your head.” It’s a full-body event. Chronic stress disrupts:

  • Hormones → affecting menstrual cycles, fertility, and libido

  • Digestion → leading to bloating, IBS, and food sensitivities

  • Immune system → leaving you vulnerable to viruses and infections

  • Cellular energy → mitochondria (your energy factories) stop functioning optimally

Over time, what started as “just stress” can spiral into chronic symptoms, or full-blown burnout.

My Personal Journey with Fatigue

I know this firsthand. After contracting COVID, I developed long-COVID and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS/ME). Overnight, the life I once lived a very active, busy, full of work and family, became overshadowed by exhaustion, brain fog, and an unpredictable body.

Like many of my clients, I tried to push through. But I had to learn the hard way that healing requires listening, not overriding. The years of pushing through and being an over achiever and type A personality is what had led me down this path (with a sprinkle of CPTSD).

This journey reshaped my approach as a practitioner. It deepened my compassion and sharpened my focus on uncovering root causes , from adrenal stress to mitochondrial health, gut imbalances, and nervous system regulation.

Beyond “Get More Sleep”

When someone comes to me saying, “I’m always tired,” we don’t just talk about bedtime routines. We dig deeper:

  • Is chronic stress draining your adrenals?

  • Is your body locked in fight-or-flight?

  • Are nutrient deficiencies or genetic variations slowing energy production?

  • Has post-viral/bacterial or mold exposure disrupted your nervous system?

  • What is true the accumulated stress-load on the body-mind?

True healing starts when we stop asking “How do I silence the symptom?” and start asking “Why is my body struggling?” . For me an important healing tool has been looking into the biological relationships to the symptoms or diagnosis.

If you’ve been feeling exhausted no matter what you do, you are not alone — and it’s not “all in your head.” Fatigue is your body’s way of asking for support, not punishment.

My own recovery journey from long COVID and CFS taught me that healing is possible when we address the root causes, not just the symptoms.
